If you have decided to start your own business there will be many decisions to make, but perhaps the first one will be what kind of business you should start. There are several other criteria to consider in choosing a business.

• Do you love working with people? If chatting with and caring about people comes naturally to you, any business where this is a necessity to do the job will suit you. Now compare that with being a mechanic who has her head under the bonnet of a car for most of the day with little customer interaction.

• Will there be a learning curve? Running your own business usually means you have to learn new skills. You don’t just do the work you love, but must administer the business side too. You must be willing and able to learn these things if you want your business to succeed.
• Does it suit your personality? If you love being out in the country or doing things on your own, certain business models such as growing flowers or boutique vegetables may suit you. If you love being surrounded by people, it would not. Choose a business that suits your personality to be truly happy doing it.
• How about lifestyle? Life changes and with each change comes different needs. If you are at the stage where you have small children and little support, certain business models would be difficult to do. Many women find working from home is easier than getting work outside the home. You may be able to make things at home and sell them on EBay, especially if you have some family support. Or perhaps you could offer a service of some kind over the Internet.

Once you start to think about the things you like to do and what you have to offer, it won’t be long before you get a great idea for your own business. It doesn’t have to be one that becomes famous and changes the world – but it could be. You just never know where it may lead. That’s half the fun.
