How You can Achieve Success… … Everytime Part 1

I know I’m making a VERY BOLD statement here, so am I just making an empty promise? Read on.

We all know that Success demands consistent hard work and seldom is achieved overnight. Hence, likewise, failure is not attained in a blink of the eyes. Usually, there is a sequence of events that precedes failure.

Realizing this fact now, what we can do first is to learn to avoid possible failures. How do you do it?

This leads me to the point I want to make in this Part 1 - Awareness of Yourself.

If you choose to look back at your previous failures, I’m not surprised at all there is a pattern in which eventually leads to those failures. Recognize how you felt, what words you said to youself and how they were said. I call these “Precursors of Failure”.

If it can be done under 2 minutes, do it now!

I haven’t gotten the book (yet) but I’ve been reading about Getting Things Done (GTD) by David Allen on the net. One little tip I picked up echoes this review of GTD “Fitter, happier, more productive” on Guardian Unlimited:

In Allen’s world, “stuff” is things in your environment - or in your head - that requires resolution. That resolution may be filing it, trashing it or acting upon it.

All must be corralled in one place and then processed using Allen’s core mantra of “Do it, delegate it, defer it”. If the action takes less than two minutes, do it there and then.

I’ve found this guiding idea to be a tremendous help. For example, my inbox used to pile up with loads of emails I always put off to replying till later, but now it’s down to nearly empty (last count was 4). If it’s something I can respond to immediately under two minutes, I do it now and then archive it away.

Hopefully some of you’ve had the chance to test the questions from Part 1 out. If you did, and you got confused at any time using the Meta Model, congratulations! I remember when I first started way back in ‘97, I got a lot more misses than hits, but the experience I got learning from those mistakes was invaluable.

Ok, so what do you do if you ever feel like you get stuck at any one time? Hopefully this example will help. Like I said in the previous post, any starting question can lead you to a nice chain of questions that help you get closer to useful specifics.

Friend: “I just don’t feel motivated anymore!” (throws arms up in air)

You: “Well, what do you want to be motivated to do?” (matching tonality and rate of speaking)

How to Motivate Specifically Part 1

I was thinking about this article “Motivation Merely Mystifies” on the way to work today. The writer, Adrian Savage says:

Buzzwords block our ability to think and communicate clearly, so people are left confused and frustrated. The buzzword “motivation” is a prime example. Though it sounds precise, it has that typical characteristic of all buzzwords: a vague cluster of meanings lumped within a single word. My dictionary defines is as “the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.” You can’t get much vaguer than that.

In NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) we call the word ‘motivation’ a nominalization. It means that motivation is a real-world process that has been turned into a thing through imprecise language. You don’t have motivation, like a car or watch, you do motivation, which is an abstract idea (you can’t hold, see, or hear motivation physically).

All this is the backdrop. Now what can you do?

simply do make over. Physical make over will lead to emotional renewal. Outside changes cause inside changes.

But do you realized that you can renew your emotional all the time without making over? Because it’s from the inside.

When inside changes it causes outside changes.

Body host the mind?
In fact, it’s the other way round.

Body is a reflection of mind. Mind forms a body.

The 10 Secrets of a Master Networker

There’s this article over at Inc.com that I really like called “The 10 Secrets of a Master Networker“, where reknown networker Keith Ferrazzi shares his secrets with Inc.com’s reporter.

The thing that really struck me about this article is how much it makes networking sound like fun. Now, I’m not the best person to make small talk, in fact, I hate it sometimes, but I’ve grown to realize the importance of knowing people, and building a strong network of not just colleagues, but friends and family around you.

A couple of his 10 secrets that I especially like:

Rule 7: Always ask.

My uncle was the first one who told me this, and Keith echoes it; “…it never hurts to ask. The worst anyone can say is no. Not many people believe that. Embarrassment and fear are debilitating.”

How true!
