5 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

General

5 things you didn’t know, or didn’t want to know about me but you’re going to find out anyway :) Tagged by the ever-lovable Senia.

1) When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut.

I used to love gazing at the stars and wonder what was out there…still do! I borrowed and poured over astronomy books from the library, dreaming about how great it’d be to be the ultimate explorer on the final frontier. I’ve since redefined the final frontier as inside of the human soul, mostly because I believe it and somewhat because Singapore doesn’t have a space program. I still recognize Orion’s Belt whenever I look up at the night sky.

2) I was in the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade in my teens.

It’s pretty obvious that even from way before I wanted to have skills that could help me help others. I left after 3 years when I was standing in the hot sun one lovely Saturday morning, being shouted at by the drill instructor and had an epiphany: I was marching more than I was learning first aid, and there were better ways to spend a Saturday morning.

3) One of my all-time favorite things to do in the world is to plug in my headphones and lose myself in the music.

Like I’m doing right now (In A Sentimental Mood by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane). Music speaks to my soul like no other, I pump it up loud so it makes everything else disappear. Wonderful way to de-stress.

4) I was vegetarian for almost a year.

Back when I was in school, for health and environmental reasons. What really did me in was eating from the same stall day in and day out, the lack of variety drove me bonkers; I was in school and I didn’t have a lot of choices for vegetarian fare. The interesting thing is that it required a conscious effort to start eating meat again, dead flesh, even cooked, has a real stench you don’t become aware of until a few months of flesh-free eating.

5) I used to write poetry.

enfold together
like an origami shape
beautiful moments
in unfolding states

A little snippet from the last poem I wrote. ‘Nuff said.

    Alvin,

Great comments! I was vegetarian for over a year also. COOOOOOL about poetry. My good friend growing up wanted to be an astronaut - I introduced her to everyone as “my friend, she’s going to be an astronaut one day!” She ended up going into science but land-based.

    Thanks for these!
    Best,

You’re welcome, Matt! I look forward to learning 5 things I didn’t know about you :)

Hey, it’s cool we were both vegetarians! What made you stop?

Hee, this was fun. Thanks for the tag!

For points 2,3 and 4, I’m actually there too!

Well, I became vegetarian for quite a while because of a documentary I seen on TV. Skipping the details, let’s just say the visual scene is gory enough to make me skip meat completely for more than 6 months!

Alright… now I better go write my 5 things then… all thanks to you friend :)
