Book Review: Success Built To Last

Success Built to Last: Creating a Life that Matters
What Is Success Built To Last?
Authors Jerry Porras (of Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies), Stewart Emery and Mark Thompson interviewed over 200 high achievers all over the world, over a ten year period and distilled their secrets into this amazing book.
And get this: everyone who was interviewed had to have had at least a track record of 20 years of enduring success, not just by the social benchmarks of success; fame, power or fortune, but have had made a positive impact on the world.
Why You’ll Love This Book
Imagine discovering what successful people have in common, distilling it into a set of simple practices, and using them to transform your company, your career, and your life.

I brought this book over with me on my recent vacation when I was feeling stressed, burnt out and out of touch. Turns out it was the perfect book for me to be reading.
Right from the start, the premise grabs you; the sheer numbers of the interviewees, the quality of the people involved, from Nelson Mandela to Sir Richard Branson, and the length of the study makes you think; these people must know what they’re talking about, and there must be at least one life-changing idea I can gleam from these pages.
After I started, I couldn’t stop reading. The book gave me new ideas on how I could do what I’m doing better, what else I could do more of, and inspired me out of my funk.
The most inspiring bit I got was the fact that most successful people never reached their success via a straight line, it was always a zig-zagging journey and often they had no clue that what they were doing would lead them to where they are now.
Very heartening for someone who feels like his own life is zig-zagging
How To Create A Life That Matters
What I love about this book from the get-go is their insistence that there is no road-map to success.
But what they did see in their study was that there were basic principles that successful people stuck to that they attributed to their success.
The authors define success as the synergy between 3 working parts:
Meaning - how successful people stay successful,
Thoughtstyles – the extreme makeovers that start in your head,
Actionstyles – how to turn passion into action.
It was revealed that people who built successful and meaningful lives never went for fame, power or fortune, many of them believe that success never lasts if that’s all you aim for. To them, success is simply doing what you love, being damn good at it and creating an insanely big dent in the universe. The fame, power and fortune just followed.
In short, creating a life that matters.
