Welcome back Nat :)

Yup, I know exactly what you mean. After nearly 8 years of practicing a Japanese martial art, I became a beginner again and started learning Chinese swordplay.

I thought my previous experience would help, but I still ended having a hard time and kinda sucking at it :P But it's a real stretch (literally too!) and a good one, and I wouldn't trade the humbling feelings I have for any of the benefits I've earned.

When you say 'stretch and look good', it reminds me of all the things I currently do that I'm absolutely terrible at (like learning Spanish!!!), but make me look good. I know it's not quite the point you're making, but it's true, often when you do things that are a real stretch, you become a lot more interesting, because these are precisely the things most people are putting in the too hard basket. You immediately gain support from a lot of people for doing something that you find hard, which is a very nice way of ensuring you stick at it!
Which reminds me of this site Iw as shown this morning (http://www.traineo.com), where you are inspired ot get fit and stay fit by nominated friends and familywho monitor your progress. Another good way of helping you continue to strecth yourself.
