Have a Blog That Makes an Insanely Great Dent in the Universe

Interpersonal Communication

Before I took the last 2 weeks off from Life Coaches Blog, I was feeling tired, rundown and burntout about blogging: I had amassed more hows, but had forgotten the whys of making a successful Life Coaches Blog.

But as I took the time these past 2 weeks to think, I began to remember just what it was that drew me to blogging in the first place.

It was something that I had often gotten as a Life Coach, and now that I’m more actively sharing my coaching online, is something that I thought I was getting less often…but which I still craved for unconsciously! And which I have the opportunity now to get more of, but I hadn’t noticed!

Things became clearer; what I had started to think about as burdens; the pressure of always having to write, the costs of running the website, the CSS problems I had difficulty fixing, were actually opportunities.

These were quality problems.

How a Blog Can Make an Insanely Great Dent in the Universe

One of the problems that was getting me down was how to increase my web traffic. Life Coaches Blog gets an average of 100 visitors a day; a smattering compared to the bigger blogs out there.

But then I began to look at things in a different way: a 100 visitors a day. That’s (a lot) more than the number of people I talk to face-to-face in a day! In fact, that’s like having a room full of a 100 people for me to speak and share my thoughts with every single day. And these are people from all over the world.

First I went; “yikes!” and then; “yippee!

It’s mind-blowing: imagine the world as a potential audience.

Blogs Kick Ass Because…

I’ve experienced much more through blogging than I thought I would when I started.

Through the magic of technology, people are coming onboard this global conversation. Everyone has something to add, something new to bring to the table, value that they could add to someone else’s life.

It doesn’t have to be big, serious and grandoise. I’ve had my day brightened by a ninja, my hunger aroused by delicious pictures, been touched by a couple’s love for each other, learnt more about marketing than I ever did from cartoons on the back of business cards, and more from people who are just writing about what they know and do in their lives. Because like Mr Wang says:

I tend to think that the vast majority of bloggers are experts, or at least potential experts, in at least one area. I even daresay that many of us are experts in more than one area. This is simply by virtue of the fact that all of us have offline lives, jobs, hobbies and experiences.

I’ve not only learnt and exchanged ideas with brilliant people, I’ve also made friends from all over the world I would never have met otherwise.

And I’ve learnt so much more about my own area of expertise: personal development. Writing it down has forced me to clarify my thoughts and become more succint. It’s also pushed me to keep growing and learning, because I want to keep sharing more and more. And the discipline has done wonders for my writing, which I love to do.

The Best Part About Blogging…

Is that it’s almost or completely free, and relatively easy! For free blogs, all you need to do is sign up at Blogger or WordPress. If you want the professionalism and security of your own domain, all you need to do is buy a domain name, get a webhost and install the free and wonderful WordPress.

How to Make an Insanely Great Dent in the Universe With Your Blog

To figure this out, I went back to this principle I first learnt from one of my mentors, Adam Khoo:

Income = Value x Time x Scalability

Your income or wealth is defined by the value you create, multiplied by the time you put in, multiplied by the amount you can scale it to.

Working as an employee is an example of getting income for value x time, but it’s only scalable to 1. So for example, that’s:

Income = $15 x 8 hours x 1 = $120/day.

That explains why Bill Gates earns more than his employees, his income isn’t limited to the time he puts in, because the value he puts in is massively scalable, with his employees and systems doing the work for him. So using the same simple example;

Income = $15 x 8 hours x 100 = $12,000/day (and Gates doesn’t just make $15 an hour).

So how does this work in a blog?

You could define income as your actual income, like I do from Adsense, or an intangible benefit, like satisfaction. If you’re the only one writing for your blog, you have to put the time in, so you can’t change that. But what you can increase is your value and your scalability. And the exciting bit about blogging is that you can potentially scale up to the world population on the internet!

To make a great dent in the universe with your blog, either increase the time you put into it, the value you create from it, and your scalability or the number of people who visit it. To make an insanely great dent in the universe with your blog, increase all 3.

Making an Insanely Great Dent in the Universe with Life Coaches Blog

Life Coaches Blog is mainly a blog of 1, even though it is called the Life Coaches Blog. That’s mainly because the other Life Coaches have gone on to other projects in their lives (one’s become a monk, for goodness sake!), and I love blogging enough to keep on going.

So the amount of time I can put into it is fixed, but the value and scalability of Life Coaches Blog is something I can increase much more exponentially than the time I put in.

One of my biggest values is to make a difference. When I was coaching people live, the feed back was immediate. But writing online in front of a computer, not knowing who’s reading or what their reactions are, is not as immediate. When I got caught up in the day-to-day work of running a blog, I forgot that just because I couldn’t see and hear the people I’m writing to doesn’t mean I’m not potentially making a difference for them.

So why does this life coach blog? To make a difference. To share what I’ve learnt through my one and a half years of life coaching easily 100 people in Akltg‘s seminars, because I believe there’s value there. To share my experience on my lifelong passion for continous personal growth, dishing out whatever tips, tools and strategies I learn, not because I’m a guru at it, but because I need it as much as you do.

Blogging is not a job, it’s a platform for speaking to the world, it’s an opportunity for me to give back. And as long as I’m going to make one, I might as well make an insanely great dent in the universe.

How Do You Want to Make an Insanely Great Dent in the Universe?

A life coaching blog could hardly end a post without a coaching question, could it? :)

While a blog is one of the ways I choose to make an insanely great dent in the universe, it’s hardly the only way. Because you have your own gifts, areas of expertise, your unique value you could add to the world, you could choose to use blogging to broadcast your voice too. Or you could find another way to do so.

How would you, if you could do it anyway you wanted to do, make an insanely great dent in the universe?

So to end, with special thanks to Apple and Steve Jobs from whom I’m cobbling the phrase together: go and make your insanely great dent in the universe!

    How come my blog

    Never gets any hits?
    Any recommendations?

    Hi RealityBytes,

    One suggestion I have is that I see a lot of recommended links out to other sites. I think what might work is if you have more original content, with your own voice and take on things then people might want to come and hear them.

    Keep the formula I suggest in the post in mind:

    Income = Value x Time x Scalability

    You want to increase your returns, increase as much value you create, time you put in or scale the traffic as much as you can.

    Also, keep going out there and making friends by participating on comments, and keep writing. I’m only 10 months into this and I’m still learning too :)

    Really, really like your “insanely great dent” phrase!

    Here’s another reason to write all the time: because it’s comforting to your readers. Here’s what Fred says about it, and I heard about Fred’s thoughts from Evelyn.
