Negativity Interruptus
Have you ever blamed everything and everyone for bad things that happened to you?
Are you incapable of holding yourself in higher esteem?
Do you bad-mouth yourself?
“I’m not experienced enough.”
“I’m too old.”
“I don’t have the time”
“I can’t remember….”
“I can’t do it….”
“Shit!!”
“It’s not MY fault!!”
“I’m an idiot!!”
Are you guilty of subjecting to be antagonized by the words and actions of others?
“You’re not smart enough.”
“You don’t have the necessary credential.”
“Stupid piece of useless junk!!”
Someone slams the door right in your face.
It rained on your parade.
I can go on…. And I really shouldn’t. You all know perfectly well what I am saying…or rather what that irritating little voice inside your head keeps telling you at times when you really should be saying otherwise.
Here’s a sure-fire way to curb those nonsense inside your head:
No matter who’s in your face or what happens to you, use Pete’s Mantra #1
Use it often enough and it becomes a habit. A habit is a habit IS a habit, and a good one to have I might add. A habit is nothing more than a conditioned response to a similar set of stimulus. So whatever’s facing you and screwing up the good times that is your birthright, tell ‘em that:
-
“You do not have PERMISSION to make me CHOOSE to FEEL bad!!”
Write it up and pin it on the wall, magnet it to fridge, tag it to everything you have, and more importantly, etch it to the very core of your being.
If the negative-voice-inside-your-head is too loud…use NLP’s co-founder Richard Bandler’s Mantra #1 to drown it out, then apply Pete’s Mantra #1.
Bandler’s (in)famous Mantra #1:
-
SHUT THE FUCK UP!!
Whenever you find yourself drifting to something disempowering in your thoughts or find doubts, fear, stupidity, procrastination and their creepy fingers extending themselves into your consciousness, use Pete’s Mantra #2 (modified from the Silva Mind Control method):
-
CancelCancelCancel…you gotta be smarter than that!!
Care to share some of your personal mantra?
Watch out for my next: Feeling good for no good reason.
Following that: Prognosticating Procrastination
I really enjoyed this post. It’s easy to forget how powerful our physical reactions are! I like your approach here. Especially reminding the reader that we are not always ready for change — though we think we are! I agree that the real failure is letting fear stop us. Thanks for posting this!
Hi Julie,
Thank you for your kind words. I am glad it was helpful! “Coping with Stress” is a part of a series of articles on Stress that I have written, hopefully Life Coaches Blog will be posting the rest. So keep in touch!
Kindest regards,
Karen
This is a great article. I especially like the list of symptoms… some of which a lot of people may not recognize as a sign of stress.
It’s also important to continue with your stress managment activities even when there are no signs or symptoms of stress. Doing this will help you become stressed less often and ward off stress before it even begins.
Hi Jill,
Absolutely, it should be a way of life! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Kindest regards,
Karen
Hi,
Great site!!!!! Good health is very important with the high cost of medical coverage. We need to have a healther lifestyle by taking care of our health eating and exercising. I am a cancer survivor and I know. Our health is our greatest asset. Keep up the Good Work!!!!!
The physical body does not differentiate between happy stress and overwhelm. Stress is stress. We need to develop coping mechanisms in our daily life to avoid the harmful, physiological effects of stress.
